Promotional Product Vector Requirements

When ordering promotional products like custom pens, water bottles, and tech gadgets, your choice of artwork file format makes all the difference. Because these items often have compact imprint areas, they require an extreme level of printing precision.

To ensure your branding looks crisp, sharp, and professional, we highly recommend and often require Vector Artwork.

The Problem with Raster Images (JPEGs & PNGs) on Promo Items

Raster images such as JPEGs and PNGs are built out of thousands of tiny, colored squares called pixels. While raster files are fantastic for photographs and t-shirt prints, they struggle significantly on small promotional surfaces for two main reasons:

  1. The Pixelation Effect: When a raster image is shrunk down to fit on the side of a pen or a smartwatch band, those pixels compress. If the original image isn't perfectly high-resolution, the edges of your logo will appear blurry, fuzzy, or jagged.
  2. Ink Bleeding on Tiny Surfaces: Unlike apparel fabrics which absorb ink freely, hard goods (like plastics and metals) require precise ink placement. On a tiny canvas, a pixelated, blurry edge causes the printing machinery to struggle, often leading to ink bleeding together and making small text completely unreadable.

Why Vector Files Are Preferred for Hard Goods

Vector files (typically ending in .AI, .EPS, or vector-based .PDF) do not use pixels. Instead, they are built using mathematical formulas that establish points, lines, curves, and shapes.

  • Infinite Scalability: You can shrink a vector logo down to the size of a dime (for a custom flash drive) or blow it up to the size of a billboard, and it will remain 100% perfectly sharp, clean, and crisp.
  • Flawless Machine Readability: Our advanced promotional machinery—including laser engravers and pad printers—reads vector lines as exact paths to follow. This allows the machines to etch or stamp ultra-fine details and tiny fonts with razor-sharp precision.
  • Separation of Spot Colors: Vector files allow our design team to cleanly isolate individual solid colors (Spot Colors), which is essential for multi-color pad printing on hard substrates.

Quick File Checklist for Your Promo Order

Before submitting your promotional product design, try to ensure your files meet these guidelines:

  • Preferred Formats: .AI (Adobe Illustrator), .EPS (Encapsulated PostScript), or a high-quality vector .PDF.
  • Convert Fonts to Outlines: In your design software, always convert all text to "outlines" or "paths." This ensures your unique fonts don't accidentally get replaced by a generic font when we open the file.
  • Keep Lines Substantial: Even with vector art, lines that are too thin can disappear during printing. Ensure all lines and negative spaces are at least 0.5 points thick.

What If You Only Have a JPEG or PNG?

Don't worry! We know that tracking down vector artwork can be difficult. If a low-resolution raster file is all you have, go ahead and upload it to the Design Studio anyway.

Every single order placed with RushOrderTees includes our Free Artwork Review. Our team of professional production artists will look at your file, and in most cases, we can recreate or clean up your logo into a high-quality vector format for free before your order goes to production. We will always send you a digital Design Proof to review and approve so you can see exactly how sharp your logo will look before we print a single item.
