Weather-Resistant Custom Outerwear: Waterproof vs Water-Repellent

    Avatar of Imri Merritt
    Imri MerrittDecember 23, 2025

When you're shopping for custom jackets and outerwear, the terminology gets confusing fast. Waterproof, water-resistant, water-repellent, weatherproof, windproof—manufacturers throw these terms around like they're interchangeable, but they're not. What you really want to know is simple: will this jacket keep my team dry when it rains, and will it hold up after we add our logo?

We're cutting through the marketing jargon to explain what these terms actually mean, how different materials and construction methods perform in real conditions, and which weather-resistant options work best for custom printing. Whether you're outfitting a work crew, ordering branded jackets for an outdoor event, or selecting activewear for your team, this guide breaks down everything you need to make the right choice.

    What Is Weather-Resistant?

"Weather-resistant" is the umbrella term for any apparel designed to handle harsh conditions better than your standard hoodie or cotton jacket. It doesn't tell you much on its own—it's more of a general category than a specific performance standard. A jacket earns this label through various features: treated fabrics that shed moisture, tighter weaves that block wind, insulated linings that trap heat, or construction details like storm flaps and adjustable cuffs.

Basically, if a manufacturer built it to hold up better in cold, wind, or rain than regular clothing, they'll call it weather-resistant. You'll also see "weatherproof" used the same way, though on a technical level, there's a distinction worth understanding.

Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant: What's the Difference?

The short answer: waterproof means you won't get wet, even standing in pouring rain for extended periods. Water-resistant (or water-repellent—they're similar) means the fabric will shed light rain or splashes, but you'll eventually get soaked in a downpour or any sustained exposure to moisture.

Think of water-resistant as your defense against a surprise drizzle or someone splashing a puddle on you. Waterproof is what you need when you're working outside all day in a storm or spending hours in wet conditions. The difference comes down to how the fabric is constructed and treated, which we'll break down in detail.

The same distinction applies to wind protection. Windproof fabrics create a complete barrier that blocks cold air from penetrating—critical for extreme conditions. Wind-resistant materials (like the lightweight shells often called windbreakers) reduce airflow and cut the chill significantly, but they won't stop wind entirely. For most everyday situations, wind-resistant is plenty. But if you're facing serious cold or sustained exposure, windproof construction makes a real difference in comfort.

    Weatherproofing Terminology

    • Waterproof: Fabric that completely prevents water penetration, even during extended exposure to heavy rain. Waterproof garments use specialized membranes (like Gore-Tex or ePTFE) and sealed seams to keep you dry in extreme wet conditions.
    • Water-Resistant: Fabric that withstands light rain or splashes but will eventually allow water through during prolonged or heavy exposure. Water-resistant materials typically use tight weaves or light coatings rather than full waterproof construction.
    • Water-Repellent: Fabric treated with a surface coating (usually DWR—Durable Water Repellent) that causes water droplets to bead up and roll off. Offers better moisture protection than water-resistant but falls short of true waterproof performance.
    • Weatherproof: A catch-all marketing term that can mean anything from waterproof to windproof to insulated. It doesn't tell you much on its own—always look for specific ratings and construction details.
    • Windproof: Fabric that creates a complete barrier against wind penetration. If a jacket is waterproof, it's generally windproof too, since the same membrane that blocks water also blocks air.
    • Wind-Resistant: Fabric that reduces airflow and cuts wind chill but doesn't create a complete barrier. Common in lightweight windbreakers and soft shells.
    • Hydrophobic: Describes materials or coatings that repel water, causing droplets to bead up and roll off the surface rather than absorbing. The outer layer of DWR-treated fabrics and the exterior of waterproof membranes are hydrophobic, preventing water from saturating the material.
    • Hydrophilic: Describes materials that attract and absorb moisture. In technical outerwear, the inner layer of some waterproof membranes is hydrophilic, drawing sweat vapor away from your skin and moving it toward the outer surface for evaporation—this is how breathable waterproof fabrics keep you dry from both external rain and internal perspiration.
    • DWR (Durable Water Repellent): A chemical treatment applied to fabric surfaces that makes water bead up and roll off. DWR wears down over time and needs reapplication, but it's essential for keeping the outer shell from getting saturated.
    • Breathability: The fabric's ability to allow water vapor (sweat) to escape while keeping liquid water out. Measured in grams per square meter per 24 hours (g/m²/24h). Higher numbers mean better moisture transfer and less clamminess during activity.
    • Hydrostatic Head Rating: The water pressure a fabric can withstand before leaking, measured in millimeters. 1,000mm handles light rain; 5,000mm handles moderate rain; 10,000mm+ handles heavy downpours. This is your clearest indicator of actual waterproof performance.
    • Seam Sealing: Tape or adhesive applied over stitched seams to prevent water from seeping through needle holes. Critical for waterproof garments—without sealed seams, even waterproof fabric will leak at the stitching. Look for "fully seam-sealed" or "critically seam-sealed" (which covers high-exposure areas only).
    • Taped Seams: Another term for seam sealing, where waterproof tape is heat-bonded over seams to block moisture penetration.
    • Membrane: A thin, specialized layer laminated between the outer shell and inner lining that provides waterproofing and breathability. Common membranes include Gore-Tex, ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene), and polyurethane (PU).
    • Shell: The outer layer of a jacket that faces the elements. Shells are built for durability and weather protection, typically made from polyester, nylon, or specialized technical fabrics.
    • Softshell: A flexible, breathable outer fabric that balances weather resistance with comfort and mobility. Softshells are less waterproof than hardshells but offer better stretch and breathability, making them ideal for active use in moderate conditions.
    • Hardshell: Rigid, highly weatherproof fabric designed for maximum protection. Hardshells prioritize waterproofing and wind resistance over flexibility, common in mountaineering and extreme-weather gear.
    • Lining: The interior layer that sits against your skin or base layers. Linings provide comfort, hide seams, and can add warmth (quilted linings) or breathability (mesh linings). Common lining materials include mesh, taffeta, tricot, and fleece.
    • Storm Flap: An extra layer of fabric that covers zippers and other openings to prevent water from seeping through. Essential for true waterproof performance.
    • Adjustable Cuffs: Wrist closures (usually hook-and-loop or snap) that let you tighten the jacket around your wrists to keep rain and wind out.
    • Articulated Elbows/Knees: Pre-shaped joints built into the garment pattern that allow natural movement without restriction. Common in workwear and performance outerwear.
    • Pit Zips: Underarm zippers that open for ventilation during high activity, preventing overheating while maintaining weather protection.
    • Denier: A unit measuring thread thickness in fabric. Higher denier means thicker, more durable material. A 300-denier shell is much tougher than a 70-denier shell but also heavier.
    • Ripstop: A weaving technique that integrates thicker reinforcement threads at regular intervals, creating a grid pattern that prevents tears from spreading. Common in outdoor and workwear shells.
    • PU Coating: Polyurethane coating applied to fabric for waterproofing. Less breathable than membranes like Gore-Tex but more affordable and common in mid-range outerwear.
    • PFC-Free: Products made without perfluorinated chemicals, which are effective for water repellency but environmentally persistent. PFC-free DWR treatments use alternative chemistries for more sustainable water protection.
    • Moisture-Wicking: Fabric designed to pull sweat away from your skin and move it to the outer surface for faster evaporation. Critical for active use and layering under weather-resistant shells.
    • Polyfill Insulation: Synthetic insulation made from polyester fibers. Measured in ounces—higher numbers mean more warmth. Unlike down, polyfill retains insulating properties when wet.
    • YKK Zipper: Industry-standard zippers known for durability and smooth operation. Many premium jackets use YKK because they're less likely to fail under stress.
    • Bluesign® Certified: Third-party certification indicating the product meets strict environmental and safety standards throughout the manufacturing process, from raw materials to finished garment.

    Customizing Weather-Resistant Materials

Weather-resistant outerwear requires careful decoration choices to maintain both the garment's protective performance and your brand's professional appearance. The right customization method depends on the fabric type, garment construction, and the outerwear use. Here are some tips for getting the best results.

    • Choose the right decoration method for the material. Screen printing, embroidery, DTF transfers, and heat-applied patches each work best on specific fabrics and constructions. Your decorator can recommend the ideal method based on the garment's shell material, waterproof rating, and intended use—don't hesitate to ask for guidance before committing to large orders.
    • Embroidery delivers professional, durable branding on most outerwear. The dimensional texture and long-lasting quality make embroidery ideal for soft shells, fleece-lined jackets, hoodies, quarter-zips, and vests. However, avoid embroidery on fully waterproof shells where needle punctures compromise the waterproof membrane and seam sealing—those holes defeat the purpose of waterproof construction.
    • DTF transfers offer the most versatility across different materials. Direct-to-film transfers handle technical fabrics exceptionally well, require less heat than screen printing (safer for synthetic shells), stretch with the garment, and hold up to weather exposure and repeated washing. DTF works on everything from lightweight windbreakers to insulated parkas, making it the go-to choice for mixed orders with various jacket types.
    • Screen printing works for simple designs on heat-tolerant materials. Traditional screen printing delivers crisp, bold graphics on fabrics that can handle the high curing temperatures required for plastisol ink. Best for simple, single-color designs and higher-volume orders. Always confirm your printer can safely process technical fabrics—some waterproof and water-resistant shells can't tolerate the heat.
    • Heat-applied patches excel on waterproof jackets and high-wear items. Modern heat-press patches don't require stitching through waterproof membranes, making them perfect for rain jackets and technical shells. They can be applied anywhere—even over pockets and seams—and rubber patches especially withstand harsh weather and rough use. Patches give workwear a professional, tactical appearance that holds up season after season.
    • Keep designs simple and appropriately sized. Outerwear gets worn frequently and in professional contexts—opt for clean, modest branding that looks sharp over time. A chest logo between 3-4 inches typically hits the sweet spot for jackets. Consider the garment color when choosing thread or ink colors: subtle combinations like off-white on workwear canvas or light gray on black soft shells create sophisticated, professional aesthetics.
    • Account for high-visibility regulations on safety jackets. Custom decoration on ANSI-rated safety jackets must not obscure reflective striping or reduce the garment's compliant background material below required minimums. Prioritize visibility and compliance over large graphics—see our guide to high-visibility workwear for detailed requirements and best practices for decorating safety apparel.
    • Avoid high-wear areas to extend decoration longevity. Skip printing or embroidering on elbows, shoulders where straps sit, areas near frequent-use zippers, or sections that regularly contact equipment or surfaces. Left chest remains the most durable location for workwear branding, with back yoke or upper back as secondary options for visibility without compromising decoration lifespan.

Making the Right Choice for Your Team

Choosing weather-resistant outerwear doesn't have to be complicated once you understand what the terminology actually means and how different fabrics perform in real conditions. Waterproof gear with sealed seams keeps you dry in downpours, water-resistant soft shells handle everyday weather while staying breathable, and windproof construction cuts the chill when temperatures drop. The key is matching the protection level to your actual needs.

RushOrderTees carries weather-resistant outerwear from brands that deliver reliable performance across all conditions and budgets. Whether you need fully waterproof rain jackets with sealed seams, versatile soft shells for active work, or insulated parkas for cold-weather job sites, we help you find the right combination of protection, comfort, and professional appearance.
