5 Couples Halloween Costumes You and Bae Will Love
01/10/2020 by Kyle Greco
If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Halloween in all my time on this planet, it’s that people love people who wear couples’ costumes.
If you want to win the Halloween party every year, boo up with someone that wants to play along. It doesn’t hurt if they bring their own creative streak, too. You two will be considered the “cute couple” year after year with your matching costumes.
I know this from experience. My wife and I have been coordinating costumes since we started dating. If we were to stop, everyone would probably think we’re getting divorced.
So, it’s important to have a deep well of ideas to take inspiration from. That’s why I’ve compiled a quick list of (mostly) DIY Halloween costumes for couples to make their mark, or keep that spark alive. They’re sure to make you the talk of the town come November 1st.
Easy Couple Costume Ideas for Lovers
The early stages of a relationship are full of excitement. There’s still so much mystery between the two of you, which can be both a beautiful and harrowing thing. Beautiful, in that each new day can result in wonderful discoveries about shared interests and values. Harrowing because your date might find your obsession with polka music to be a little too much (don’t pull out the accordion until at least the 4th month).
If you feel like you haven’t reached the point where you can tell bae how much you love to go big for Halloween, these costume ideas provide a simpler alternative while still being fun. On the flip side, if you aren’t much of a Halloween person, these ideas are easy enough to put together and wear that you won’t feel totally out of your comfort zone. Let’s take a look!
Salt and Pepper (or any classic food pairing)
You and your S.O. are a perfect pair, but you’re also busy. If you’re short on time and inspiration, but still want to remind everyone how well you two go together, rely on something everyone can relate to– food.
Not only is it a super easy costume– two shirts are all you need– but it makes a universal reference. Remember that year you and your ex went as the couple from 50 Shades of Grey and everyone just thought you were gross? You don’t want to repeat that again. Keep it simple so everyone understands.
What you need:
Grab two custom shirts: one in white that says S and one in black that says P. Put a colander on your head to imitate the top of a shaker. When it comes to making an easy couple costume, it doesn’t get much more straightforward than this!
Of course, you might want to spice it up a bit more than that. You can apply this concept to any of your favorite food combos: hot dog and mustard (ketchup is for fries, sorry not sorry), peanut butter and jelly, or mayonnaise and sardines (just me?).
Here’s a helpful hint: Our design studio is stocked with the fonts and artwork you need to express that you two complement each other deliciously. With our help, you’re sure to create an awesome look that embodies your relationship and favorite food pairing.
Netflix & Chill
Otherwise known as every millennial’s favorite past-time (mostly because we’re too broke and too tired to go out) this represents a practice most modern couples have partaken in at one point or another. There’s nothing quite like hanging out with the one you love, with premium television playing in the background.
What You Need:
This one is pretty simple, which makes it an excellent last-minute Halloween costume idea. Again, you’ll need two shirts: one red, one blue. You could go the obvious route and simply print “NETFLIX” and “CHILL” on them, but why not take it a little further? Put your favorite streaming device (or a television– remember those?) on the Netflix shirt, and ice cubes, snowflakes, or a penguin on the Chill shirt!
Get playful with it. It might not be the most elaborate costume, but it can still be fun. And chances are good you and your sweetheart will be the most comfortable ones at the party.
DIY Couples Costumes for You and Your Ride-or-Die
Early on in the relationship, you and your honey might have held back some of your true thoughts and feelings. It could have been about anything. Maybe you didn’t reveal your secret antique spoon collection to them at first, or maybe they never told you that they lick envelopes for the flavor.
At some point, though, each of you embraced the other’s weirdness, and that’s a beautiful thing. Celebrate it by going the extra mile to pull off these fun couple Halloween ideas.
Bonnie and Clyde
“This here’s Miss Bonnie Parker. I’m Clyde Barrow. We rob banks.”
You know you’ve always wanted to drop that quote in front of a room full of people. Not because you want to glamorize a life of crime, but because that film is just so damn cool.
While we’d never endorse a lifestyle predicated on thievery, we can always get behind your aspirations to be as stylish as Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway are in the movie.
So forget about the generic “lady gangster” or “old-timey bank robber” costumes you can find at party stores. Chances are they won’t fit you correctly, and they won’t look as sharp as anything you already have in your closet.
What You Need:
Clyde will need to wear a three-piece suit. You have that in your wardrobe, right? Failing that, he’ll at least need to wear a vest and dress shirt with some slacks. Old-fashioned headwear is also the move. A fedora or newsboy cap will round out the look fittingly.
Bonnie needs a smart sweater and ascot combo. She’ll want to pair those with a knee-length skirt. Most importantly, she can’t forget about her color-coordinated beret.
Now the two of you need a sack of money to carry around like the marauders you are. It’s pretty easy to make one yourself. Grab an old pillowcase and some black felt. Cut dollar signs out of the felt, and attach them to the pillowcase with glue, tape, or safety pins. Fill it with fat stacks of (play) money or cotton to make it look like you’re making off with the real loot.
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy
I Love Lucy. The Office. Spongebob Squarepants. What do they all have in common? They’re some of the greatest television comedies ever written.
Don’t think that the last one should be included? I defy you to go back and tell me that the show isn’t a timeless classic.
But everybody’s already been Spongebob and Patrick for Halloween. That’s why it’s time to hop in your invisible boatmobile and pick up a few simple things to transform into the oldest crime-fighting duo in Bikini Bottom.
What You Need:
Mermaid Man will require green tights and dish gloves to go with black shorts, which you probably already have. He’ll also need an orange sweatshirt with purple seashells printed on the left and right chest, to act as his, um, armor.
While you’re out at the store, pick up a pair of blue dish gloves and an ascot to match (a blanket or bandana will also work) for Barnacle boy. A simple red sweatshirt and a pair of black shorts will flesh out the rest of the look.
The most fun part of this couples’ costume lies in the details! Barnacle Boy needs a little sailor hat– maybe you can find one in the kid’s section. Mermaid Man needs a starfish where his nose should be, a look easily achieved with purple face paint.
Bonus points if you can match Barnacle Boy’s goggles and flippers, and Mermaid Man’s fuzzy pink slippers.
Double bonus points if you walk around the party with a defeated slouch, like they do.
Bob Ross and a Happy Little Tree
Ah, The Joy of Painting. Whether you know your way around a canvas thanks to Mr. Ross’ gentle lessons, or you simply enjoy nodding off to his soothing voice, this couples costume offers a little something for both of you. One gets to dress up as a public television icon, and the other gets to impersonate his favorite plant.
Does one of those sound more interesting than the other? It depends who you ask. Whichever role you end up playing, just remember the wise words of the man himself: “there’s nothing wrong with having a tree as a friend.”
What You Need:
Bob’s look is forever etched into our collective consciousness, so you’ll need to match that if you want to pull off this costume idea.
It requires a permed hairstyle (go for a curly wig), a paint palette (get creative with cardboard), beard (roving wool works wonders), and a blue button down. Remember to wear your friendliest smile, too.
The tree has a little more freedom in how they craft their look. Leaves are the can’t-miss element here. Whether you buy them from the craft store (along with the wool for Bob’s beard) or harvest them from the ground is up to you, just make sure you can find a way for them to stick to your branches– I mean, arms.
But what about your trunk? You could print colorful leaves on a brown shirt, to fit in with the season. You could go one step further and print a little tree hollow on it, too. Maybe you could even insert the image of a cute little woodland creature– whimsical!
The Secret to Cute Couple Costumes
Finding couples costume ideas isn’t always easy. There may even be years where the whole conceit feels a little stale. The one thing to remember is to always have fun dressing up with your partner. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter if your costume turns heads or not– the point is to make memories with the one you love.
Do that, and everything else is icing on the cake.
