5 Couples Halloween Costumes (Plus One Bonus!) You and Bae Will Love in 2020
9/28/2020 by Kyle Greco
Though Halloween might be a quieter affair this year– maybe just you and your significant other scaring yourselves with dumb horror movies– getting dressed up is still a total must, right?
Plus, if you do happen to be going to any type of (socially-distanced) gathering, I can tell you from experience that being the couple who wears matching costumes will get you a whole lot of attention. It’s how people know that you’re in love.
Whether you always dress up together and you’re running out of ideas or this is a first and you want to make it a memorable one, you’re sure to need inspiration!
This quick list of mostly DIY Halloween costumes is going to have you and bae all set up this year.
Easy Couple Costume Ideas for Lovers
If you’re in the early stages of a relationship, suggesting a couple’s costume can be quite a big move.
If you feel like you haven’t reached the point where you can tell bae how much you love to go big for Halloween, these costume ideas provide a simpler alternative while still being fun. On the flip side, if you aren’t much of a Halloween person, these ideas are easy enough to put together and wear that you won’t feel totally out of your comfort zone.
Salt and Pepper (or Any Classic Food Pairing)
Okay, let’s be honest: This look is super cute. You’re telling everyone around (and each other) that you think you go well together by using a totally relatable thing… food.
It’s also easy! So, if your partner is totally not fussed about Halloween, they’re really not going to take much persuading.
There’s no need to spend hours agonizing over your perfect look and what it says about you as a couple… As is often true in relationships, the less overthinking the better here.
What you need:
Grab two custom shirts: one in white that says S and one in black that says P. You can even put colanders on your head to imitate shaker tops.
You can also apply this concept to any of your favorite food combos: hot dog and mustard (ketchup is for fries, sorry not sorry), peanut butter and jelly, or mayonnaise and sardines (just me?).
Here’s a helpful hint: Our design studio is stocked with the fonts and artwork you need to express that you two complement each other deliciously. With our help, you’re sure to create an awesome look.
Netflix & Chill
Otherwise known as every millennial’s favorite past-time (mostly because we’re too broke and too tired to go out) Netflix and Chill represents the reality of modern relationships. There’s nothing quite like hanging out with the one you love, while Netflix asks if you’re really still there because you’ve watched 500 episodes without moving.
What You Need:
This one is pretty simple, which makes it an excellent last-minute Halloween costume idea. Again, you’ll need two shirts: one red, one blue. You could go the obvious route and simply print “NETFLIX” and “CHILL” on them, but why not take it a little further? Put your favorite streaming device (or a TV even) on the Netflix shirt, and ice cubes, snowflakes, or a penguin on the Chill shirt!
DIY Couples Costumes for You and Your Main One
If you’re a little further along in your relationship, you’ve got over their annoying habits somewhat and totally embraced their weirdness, why not celebrate with a Halloween costume idea that’s a little… extra.
Bonnie and Clyde
“This here’s Miss Bonnie Parker. I’m Clyde Barrow. We rob banks.”
None of us can deny that we’ve always wanted to drop that quote in front of a room full of people. We’re not all criminals, thank God, but that film is just so damn cool. And Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway are real style goals.
Forget about the generic “lady gangster” or “old-timey bank robber” costumes you can find at party stores. Chances are they won’t fit you correctly, and they won’t look as sharp as anything you already have in your closet.
What You Need:
Clyde will need to wear a three-piece suit. You have that in your wardrobe, right? Failing that, he’ll at least need to wear a vest and dress shirt with some slacks. Old-fashioned headwear is also the move. A fedora or newsboy cap will finish the look fittingly.
Bonnie needs a smart sweater and ascot combo. You’ll want to pair those with a knee-length skirt. Most importantly, don’t forget about the color-coordinated beret.
The two of you also need a sack of money to carry around. Luckily, you won’t have to rob any banks. It’s pretty easy to make a fake one yourself. Grab an old pillowcase and some black felt. Cut dollar signs out of the felt, and attach them to the pillowcase with glue, tape, or safety pins. Fill it with fat stacks of cotton to make it look like you’re making off with the real loot.
Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy
I Love Lucy. The Office. Spongebob Squarepants. What do they all have in common? They’re some of the greatest television comedies ever written.
Don’t think that the last one should be included? I defy you to go back and tell me that the show isn’t a timeless classic.
The thing is, everybody’s already been Spongebob and Patrick for Halloween. Let’s take things back to this iconic crime-fighting duo for a second. Bikini Bottom wouldn’t know what’s hit it.
What You Need:
Mermaid Man will require green tights and dish gloves to go with black shorts. The good news is you probably already have this, bar the green tights– although no judgement if you do! He’ll also need an orange sweatshirt with purple seashells printed on the left and right chest, to act as his, um, armor.
You’ll also need a pair of blue dish gloves and an ascot to match for Barnacle boy. A matching blanket or bandana will also work. Then grab a simple red sweatshirt and a pair of black shorts to flesh out the rest of the look.
The most fun part of this couples’ costume lies in the details! Barnacle Boy needs a little sailor hat– maybe you can find one in the kid’s section. Mermaid Man needs a starfish where his nose should be, a look easily achieved with purple face paint.
Bonus points if you can match Barnacle Boy’s goggles and flippers, and Mermaid Man’s fuzzy pink slippers.
Double bonus points if you walk around the party with a defeated slouch, like they do.
Bob Ross and a Happy Little Tree
Though Bob Ross has become somewhat of an internet meme over the last few years, this is out of nothing but pure love for the man and his happy little trees. Pay homage to this calming pair with a couples costume that’s truly outside of the box. Bob would be proud of the creativity!
If one of you is slightly less excited to be the tree, just remember… “there’s nothing wrong with having a tree as a friend.”
What You Need:
Bob’s look is forever etched into our collective consciousness, so you’ll need to match that if you want to pull off this costume idea.
It requires a permed hairdo or curly wig, a paint palette (obviously) a beard (roving wool works wonders), and a blue button down shirt. Remember to wear your friendliest smile, too.
The tree has a little more freedom in how they craft their look. Just don’t go for the basic brown T-shirt with two green bits stuck on! Though leaves are the can’t-miss element here; whether you buy them from the craft store (along with the wool for Bob’s beard) or harvest them from the ground is up to you, just make sure you can find a creative way for them to stick to your branches– I mean, arms.
BONUS: Cards Against Humanity
There’s nothing like a game of cards against humanity to push the boundaries in a social situation. Whether you’re looking to display an inside joke between the two of you and your friends or to make a little dig at your partner (in jest, of course) this outfit idea is bound to be a hit!
What You Need:
Again, this is a super simple look. We all know how those black and white cards look! One of you simply needs to wear a black T-Shirt and the other a white one. Then, on either a piece of card or printed onto your tee, find a hilarious question and answer combination.
The Secret to Cute Couple Costumes
The best couples are those who can enjoy Halloween every year with the spirit of teenagers dressing up for a party! While finding couples’ costume ideas isn’t always easy, sometimes all it takes is a spark of inspiration.
We hope that this list has given you that. Whether you’re going to see family or staying in, Halloween is sure to provide some comic relief this year!
